I get the impression that Florida can feel overwhelmingly touristy. It's full of resorts and amusement parks and golf courses. But if you stick to the state parks and small towns you can get a refreshing view of America's vacation land. Maddie showed us around Honeymoon Island State Park, just outside of Tampa. We walked along the quiet sandy beach, looked at dolphins swimming nearby, and had lunch at a local brewery. My husband Ben and I have been in Florida for the past five days on our road trip South and we couldn't be luckier hang out with this girl Maddie. She has shown us around so we don't end up paying too much or going to crowded spots that travel websites recommend. The internet is a great tool for planning trips but talking to local people is far better. That's how you find the real hidden gems.
