Something about this winter solstice has me daydreaming about Scandinavia. It's a comfort for me to think of people in the North, living places far colder and darker than Pennsylvania, who have a culture of embracing the wintry weather. What I'm referring to specifically is the Danish word Hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) which refers to that peaceful feeling which comes with coziness. Hygge is a night in with friends, it's the feeling of a mug between your palms, it's the comfort of thick socks. So instead of fighting winter's blast, I'm trying my best to bundle up, appreciate the season, and welcome the hygge. Today I did this by baking glazed ginger cookies and lighting candles around the house to provide a cozy atmosphere. Tomorrow we are off to the Swedish American Museum to learn more the culture that keeps captivating my imagination.
The sunlight catching these seedpods look like tiny golden Christmas lights. Aren't they pretty?
So much can change in a few short months. The last time I was at this particular bend in the creek the world was green, the air was heavy, and my arms were bare. I was shooting photos for my post on Mori culture. Today the earth's green was replaced by gray and gold, the air was crisp, and I had to wear my coat and and scarf to stay comfortable. Winter is a time of year when practicality really usurps fashion. I would rather be warm than look cute so bring on the layers and the marshmallow coats!
